World Refugee Day recognizes the perseverance and fortitude of those fleeing conflict, violence, and persecution and, as the UN Secretary General has acknowledged, “the compassion of those who welcome them.” Today is also an opportunity for us to educate ourselves about the growing global refugee crisis and the millions of people forcibly displaced from their homes in Syria, Haiti, Ukraine, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Venezuela, among far too many other countries.
To live safely and free of persecution is a fundamental human right. While our immigration system is deeply flawed, HSPRD’s immigration team is proud to advocate for this right and to represent people seeking asylum. “It is the obligation of every person born in a safer room to open the door when someone in danger knocks.”— Dina Nayeri
