U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Announces Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan

In a move that will protect nationals from Afghanistan presently in the United States,  the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on March 16, 2022 the designation of Afghanistan for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. This designation will take effect upon publication of a forthcoming Federal Register Notice, which will also include instructions for applying for TPS and an employment authorization document. The TPS will apply only to those individuals who are already residing in the United States as of March 15, 2022, and meet all other requirements, including undergoing security and background checks.
