HSPRD files a Lawsuit against Alexander County Housing Authority

Housing Development

Yesterday, HSPRD and the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law filed a federal class action lawsuit on behalf of current and former Alexander County Housing Authority residents against the Alexander County Housing Authority (ACHA) and it’s four past executive directors in Cairo Illinois.  The lawsuit accuses ACHA of discrimination based on race and family status and of rent overcharges.  The lawsuit claims that plaintiffs were charged $100-$200 more than they should have been on average and that the ACHA has engaged in segregation by race at its public housing development. Seven ACHA residents of McBride and Elmwood apartments are named as plaintiffs and they are represented by HSPRD attorney Christopher Wilmes and  Katherine Walz of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law.
