HSPRD Attorneys Settle Case for Couple Experiencing Homelessness

In May, Kate Schwartz and Caryn Lederer of HSPRD, together with co-counsel from the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, settled their clients’ Illinois Bill of Rights for the Homeless Act lawsuit against the City of Chicago. Plaintiffs Amie Smith and Shawn Moore alleged in their Complaint that for more than a year while they were struggling with homelessness, City employees, including numerous officers of the Chicago Police Department, continuously harassed them because of their homeless status by, among other things, routinely destroying their personal property, baselessly forcing them to leave public areas, and cruelly subjecting them to derogatory remarks about their homelessness. Ms. Schwartz and Ms. Lederer are thrilled that after successfully defeating the City’s motion to dismiss and engaging in discovery they were able to obtain justice for their deserving clients.
