HSPRD attorneys Matthew Piers and Kate Schwartz were interviewed by Bolts for an article about the Illinois Supreme Court appeal concerning the elimination of monetary bail across the state. Piers and Schwartz explain how, contrary to the lower court’s decision, the abolition of monetary bail does not violate separation of powers or conflict with the language of the Illinois Constitution. Piers, Schwartz, and HSPRD attorney Margaret Truesdale, together with the ACLU of Illinois, filed the amicus brief in support of the end of monetary bail on behalf of over 400 signers last month.
