HSPRD’s immigration attorney Kelli Fennell recently spent one week volunteering at the South Texas Family Residential Center (STFRC) through the Dilley Pro Bono Project. STFRC is a private for-profit detention center where the American government detains women and children who are seeking protection from harm in their home countries. The detention center holds up to 2,400 women and children at any given time.
“This was my fourth trip to Dilley, Texas to volunteer with the inspiring women detained at the STFRC,” said Ms. Fennell. “I am grateful to work at a law firm like Hughes, Socol, Piers, Resnick, & Dym that has supported me in doing this work.”
Ms. Fennell describes the women and children at the detention center as some of the strongest and most resilient people she has ever met. Most of them endured long and dangerous journeys, faced difficult decisions to flee violent and often life-threatening conditions in their home countries, and left loved ones behind, all while putting their lives at risk to ensure their family’s safety. The Dilley Pro Bono Project team are fierce advocates for these women and work around the clock to ensure they have a fair opportunity to present their asylum case. The project is assisted by volunteers from all walks of life from all over the northern hemisphere.
