Plaintiffs RySheena Moore, Cadeidga Coleman, Janishia Fleming, and Sheliah Thomas Ayanwale, all Black women utilizing Housing Choice Vouchers, sought rental housing in Hyde Park. Despite available units within their budgets, Mac Properties denied them the opportunity to tour or apply for newer, renovated apartments with amenities. Instead, they were directed toward older, unrenovated buildings they had not requested, often located farther from the lakefront and Hyde Park’s central commercial areas. The Plaintiffs, represented by Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Hughes Socol Piers Resnick & Dym, aim to represent themselves and other Voucher holders who have experienced similar discriminatory practices by Mac Properties.
