On Monday, May 14, 2018, The Seattle Times reported on a surge of companies audited by immigration officials to verify that employees are authorized to work in the U.S. Under the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, companies must verify that employees have valid work authorization. Otherwise, they may subject to fines or even criminal prosecution. There was a nearly 60% increase in workplace audits by immigration enforcement authorities between October 2016 and September 2017. The head of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigations unit has indicated that another nationwide wave of audits is expected this summer.
