On March 15, 2018, HSPRD Attorney Chirag Badlani spoke at The Chicago Bar Association (CBA) on Immigration Litigation Updates: DACA, Bonds, and Sanctuary Cities. Chirag addressed the status of ongoing litigation around the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the recent Supreme Court decision in Jennings v. Rodriguez addressing detained immigrants’ right to a bond hearing, and the current legal challenges involving “Sanctuary Cities.”
HSPRD has filed amicus briefs in support of challenges to the Trump administration’s efforts to rescind the DACA program, on behalf of law enforcement leaders who argue that DACA has helped to enhance public safety by taking away the fear of removal from nearly 800,000 individuals who are active members of their communities, and by providing work authorization and identification to a group of people who are integrated into American society.
HSPRD has also filed amicus briefs in support of cities and states’ challenges to the Trump Administration’s efforts to entangle local policing with federal immigration enforcement. In these briefs, law enforcement and prosecution leaders urge the courts to block the Department of Justice from requiring local jurisdictions to abandon policies designed to build trust with immigrant communities in order to receive essential federal funds that support local law enforcement initiatives.
